Xavier Viramontes

Richmond, California

Xavier Viramontes, a Mexican-American print maker, his work reflects the life of most Mexican-Americans growing up in South Southwestern United States. His work often resembles the movies that most Mexican-American children grew up on, which reflect the period that their grandparents or even parents were raised.

About Xavier Viramontes

Xavier Viramontes immigrated to the United States in the 1930s. While attending elementary school Viramontes became interested in painting, although initially wanting to become a painter, Viramontes was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War. However, this was a blessing in disguise since Viramontes would be stationed in Germany, where he would be able to tour some of the greatest art galleries in the world. Upon returning to the US, Viramontes would pursue painting but later switch to metal plate etchings.

Art has to be taught; at least some of the techniques have to be taught. After you master the techniques then you can let your creativity lose.”
